If you've spent any time around me, you'll quickly discover I have a hard time walking past art supplies. Paper? I have too much. Digital artwork? Definitely too much. Vintage illustrations? Thousands. Give me a creative idea and there's a good chance I'll disappear down the rabbit hole until I've figured it out.
That's exactly what happened with image transfers.
Years ago, I got it into my head that I wanted to make artwork on wood instead of canvas. So my son Rowan and I headed to Home Depot, where I bought this ridiculously long twelve-inch-wide board and asked one of the employees if he would cut it into twelve-by-twelve squares. He smiled, made all the cuts for free, and suddenly I had a stack of blank panels sitting in my car and a head full of ideas.
Then came the hunt.
I spent hours searching for vintage illustrations, birds, botanical prints, typography, and anything else that inspired me. I flipped every image, printed stacks of laser copies, gathered my supplies, and started experimenting.
Some projects turned out beautifully.
Others... not so much.
Eventually, I discovered a process that worked every single time.
I created crow panels, vintage portraits, mixed-media canvases, and decorative pieces that sold almost as quickly as I could finish them. I thought I had finally figured it out.
Then life happened.
More than a decade passed, and when I decided to revisit image transfers, I assumed there had to be a newer, cheaper, easier method.
So I watched YouTube.
I tried different glues.
I tried inkjet printers.
I tried different papers.
I tried shortcuts.
I ruined canvases.
I wasted supplies.
I spent weeks trying to recreate something I had already mastered years before.
The frustrating part wasn't that image transfers were difficult.
The frustrating part was that I had forgotten one simple ingredient that made all the difference.
When I finally returned to the original method, everything worked again.
Perfectly.
That experience reminded me of something I believe about creativity.
Sometimes the best solution isn't the newest one.
It's the one that's quietly been working all along.
That's why I created this lesson.
I'm not sharing a technique I learned last week. I'm sharing one I've tested, refined, walked away from, rediscovered, and proven through years of trial and error. I've already spent the money on the failed experiments, wasted the canvases, and chased the shortcuts so you don't have to.
My goal is simple.
I want to save you time.
I want to save you frustration.
Most of all, I want to help you create artwork you'll be proud to hang in your home, give as a gift, or even sell.
